The Grey & Bruce counties have some of the best freshwater swimming locations in Ontario. From the clear water of Tobermory, to the quiet beach at Eugenia Lake, there is something for everyone. From swimming, fishing to canoeing, we have some of the most diverse areas to take advantage of.
Located on the shores of Lake Huron, Sauble Beach is a great place to bring the family for a day in the sun. Set camp for the day on the long sand shores and enjoy a swim along the long beach with several sandbars for people of all heights. The sandbars keep the water shallow and warm. This is a great place for other water activities such as swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, fishing, and boating. The village features several beach community shops and grocery/restaurant options. There will be an admission fee to drive onto the beach.
Sitting in the inlet of Georgian Bay, Wasaga Beach is part of Simcoe County. It is known for its sandy beaches and hopping pub life. In fact, Wasaga Beach sits on the longest freshwater beach in the world! During the summer months, you will see several water sports taking place along the beach. This includes swimming, windsurfing, water-skiing, fishing, and boating.
Eugenia Lake is an artificial lake located in Eugenia, just east of Flesherton. With a public beach and public boat launch, Eugenia Lake is a great place to enjoy the day with the family. There are approximately 400 cottages on the lake and great fishing to boot. In addition to the water activities, Eugenia is a great place to go for a hike with the Bruce Trail a short distance away. Eugenia Falls is another great spot to see in the area.
Bruce Peninsula/Georgian Bluffs
Tobermory features some of the clearest water you will ever see! The visibility of freshwater fish and shipwrecks. There are several tours that will bring you out to the shipwreck area by boat and even a scuba tour of the area. Adventure Sports Newmarket Inc. has several great options to take advantage of nature in the area. In addition to the variety of water sports available in the area, Tobermory also offers several hiking trails that have terrific views of the Flowerpot rock formations and even a grotto. Tobermory is dog friendly as well, including some of the accommodations in the area if you want to stay over. Please be sure to pick up after your dog.
Cedar Hill Park, located Owen Sound and Wiarton, is a great place to spend the afternoon with your family. It’s a quiet location, slightly hidden from tourists in the area. If you’d like to go for a swim, it is recommended that you bring water shoes, as the algae covered rocks can be slippery. There is free parking along the shoreline.
The Blue Mountains
Located on the Southern shores of Georgian Bay and a few steps away from Blue Mountain, Craigleith Provincial Park offers a great variety of activities all geared for the outdoors type. Bring your family camping and rent a canoe. The views on the lake are amazing!
Located between Collingwood and Meaford, Little River Beach Park is a terrific place to go swimming and fishing with your family. The pebble beach is located in a small cove which limits the waves coming in from Georgian Bay, thus offering the perfect place to have a swim on a hot day.
Located between Meaford and The Blue Mountains, Christie Beach has a small sandy shoreline with a couple picnic tables to have a family snack. In addition to the picnic areas, there are also public washrooms, a playground for kids and is pet friendly. Be sure to pick up after your dog.
The Blue Dolphin Pool in Meaford offers a variety of aquatic programs and lessons for every level of swimmer. With diving boards and lifeguards, this is certainly the place to continue the learning process for swimming. Pool rentals are available.
The Fairview Trailer Park Ltd. is located just outside of Meaford to the Northwest. Fairview Trailer Park is a private property and has park management onsite during the summer season. Available to customers is a private boat launch, fish cleaning station, WiFi access, heated play area for children and private washrooms & showers. The beach is private and only accessible to campers. Reachout to Fairview Trailer Park today and book a spot this season.
With just over 500 meters of shore and a pebble stone beach, Ainslie Wood Conservation Area is another great picnic place in Grey County. There is parking and waterfront access. Ainslie Wood Conservation Area is located just Northeast of Owen Sound.
The Hibou Beach and Conservation Area offers both a large and small pavillion available for rent to keep your family out of the sun on a hot day. There is a small fee for parking, which can be purchased on your phone or in person at the gate. There is a sandy beach in a small cove that offers gentle waters, perfect for kids. There are a few great hiking trails in the immediate area as well.
The Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre offers several activities to the Owen Sound area. The swimming pool features lanes with diving boards for each lane, a slide, lifeguard and a gym. Swimming lessons are available for every skill level. In addition to the swimming area, the Julie McArthur Centre also has an ice rink. The facilities here are available for private rental.
Kelso Beach Park, located in Owen Sound, has a small beach area where families can gather for a swim. Bring a chair to put under a tree and watch the birds and fish jumping in the water. There are several great fishing locations at Kelso Beach, with a stream feeding into the bay. In the southern part of the park is the Good Cheer Splash Pad, an area perfect for kids to play with the interactive water features on a hot day.
